Ovoid vase one of a pair, slender, on a low ring-shaped foot and a narrow neck, flaring at the rim. The foot and mouth are framed with sheet metal. Decorated with a motif of a blooming iris bush, captured with naturalistic fidelity and attention to a variety of color tones. Executed using the yusen technique, the motif is placed against a uniform sea-green background. Around the foot and the rim there are narrow, colorful borders, also made using the yusen technique, composed of small triangular forms called cicada wings. Cloisonné enamel. Japanese, Meiji period, ca. 1900. Nagoya. Height 25 cm; width 9.7 cm; depth 8.8 cm., A tall, narrow vase with a flared neck and rounded shoulders, finished in a deep teal color with a glossy surface; a decorative band in muted gold and red encircles the rim and the base, the base band incorporating a repeating scalloped motif in blue, white, and gold; a few long, slender green leaves rise from the lower portion along one side, and a partial pale white flower petal is visible near the right side; the background is a soft neutral gray.
