Vase, Hiratsuka, Mohei 1836-? creator, gift, Japanese art, Meiji 1868-1912. A slender ovoid, double-walled bottle on a very low ring foot with a narrow neck flaring at the spout. The outer wall is openwork composed of densely arranged, colorfully enameled cloisonné wisteria flowers and leaves filling the entire body. Flowers are rendered naturalistically in shades of lilac and blue using multiple enamel tones; leaves use several green tones. The lower body has a strip of silver left around the foot decorated with an engraved stylized wave motif. The arms of the vessel are solid silver, with a strip of stylized clouds above the floral ornament in a Far Eastern manner. The neck is enclosed by a rosette with petals decorated with a multicolored miniature stylized plant ornament with chrysanthemum half-rosettes, leafy forms, and volutes. Mark on the bottom: oval convex plaque with the artist's name: Hiratsuka. ca. 1880–1890 Meiji Period, Japan. Vessel; height 19.1 cm; diameter 7.2 cm., A tall cylindrical vase with a narrow flared neck sits against a plain neutral background; the vase surface is dark metallic and richly textured with a dense relief of leaves and clustered flowers in shades of green, pale blue, and light purple, with the metallic base showing through between the botanical motifs; the neck and rim have ornamental metalwork with small enamel accents in muted colors, and the bottom band has a smooth polished metallic finish that reflects the surface beneath, creating a subtle mirrored effect.
