Vase by Hiratsuka Mohei b. 1836 maker, Meiji period, ca. 1880–1890, Japan. Slender ovoid, double-walled bottle on a very low ring foot with a narrow neck flaring at the spout. Outer wall is openwork composed of densely arranged, colorfully enamelled cloisonné wisteria flowers and leaves filling the body. Flowers rendered naturalistically in shades of lilac and blue with multiple enamel tones; leaves in several green tones. Lower body has a strip of exposed silver around the foot engraved with a stylized wave motif. The arms of the vessel are solid silver, with a strip of stylized clouds above the floral ornament. Neck enclosed by a rosette with petals decorated with a multicolored miniature stylized plant ornament including chrysanthemum half-rosettes, leafy forms, and volutes. Mark on the bottom: oval convex plaque with the artist's name: Hiratsuka. Vessel; height 19.1 cm, diameter 7.2 cm., A tall, narrow vase with a rounded shoulder and flared neck sits against a neutral background; the surface is richly decorated with an allover relief pattern of cascading cluster-like flowers and layered compound leaves, with the flowers appearing in shades of pale purple and light blue and the leaves in shades of green, all set against a dark metallic base that shows highlights of silver and darker gray; the neck and base have smooth metallic areas with subtle engraved swirls and scalloped motifs, and the vase casts a soft reflection on the surface beneath it.
