Vase, Tomiki, Shôbei fl. ca. 19th/20th century craftsman, chidori plovers, cloisonné enamel, Japanese art, reeds, waves, decorative vessel, Meiji 1868–1912, Signature: Tomiki engraved on the bottom in a vase-shaped cartouche, 3 katakana characters: Tomiki; artist Tomiki Sobei, 19th/20th century Meiji period, Japan; vessel; height 12.2 cm, width 5.6 cm, depth 5.6 cm, A tall, rounded vase with a narrow neck and flared rim sits against a pale gray background; the vase is predominantly light blue with a textured, speckled surface and areas of deeper blue, green, brown, white, black, and gray. The body of the vase is decorated with a scene of several birds in various flying and perched poses, their feathers rendered in shades of brown, white, black, and gray with small red accents on their beaks or feet. Near the base and lower sides there are stylized green leaves and stems, and a rocky motif in gray and brown. Subtle wave-like markings in lighter blue and white suggest water across the midsection. The rim and foot of the vase are darker, appearing black or very dark gray, and the vase rests on a reflective surface that mirrors its colors faintly.
