Vase, Tomiki, Shôbei fl. ca. 19th/20th century craftsman, chidori plovers, reeds, waves; cloisonné enamel; Meiji period 1868–1912, Japan; decorative vessel; Signature: Tomiki engraved on the bottom in a vase-shaped cartouche with 3 katakana characters: Tomiki Tomiki Sobei, 19th/20th century; height 12.2 cm, width 5.6 cm, depth 5.6 cm., A tall, slender vase with a narrow neck and flared rim sits centered against a pale gray background, its surface showing a textured, pebbled finish in shades of light blue and turquoise that deepen toward the lower half, where sweeping horizontal brushlike strokes create a band of richer blue with hints of green. The vase has subtle darker accents at the rim and base in a deep gray or black, and there are a few delicate, thin, plantlike motifs in muted green and brown near the lower portion. The vase rests on a small foot and casts a soft reflection on the glossy surface beneath it.
