Ceramic, Meiji period 19th/20th century, 1868–1912. Japan, Kyoto. Vessel; height 11.7 cm, diameter 6.5 cm., A cylindrical vase with a bulbous neck and foot in mottled brown and reddish tones, decorated around the middle with a detailed painted scene featuring a group of people wearing ornate garments in colors such as gold, pale blue, green, lavender, and red, set against a backdrop of architectural elements and foliage rendered in muted greens, beige, and pale browns; the painted band is edged with narrow decorative borders in gold and the lower part of the scene shows water and reeds in green and pale purple.
