Small box with a lid, Kinkôzan, Sôbei VII 1867–1927 maker, Kinkôzan workshop, Japanese, Meiji period late 19th century. Satsuma ceramics decorated with wisteria and butterflies. The lid has a gold knob in the shape of a flower. The vessel has two slightly convex handles and stands on three wide feet. Signed. Kyoto, Awata. Height 6.8 cm; diameter 10.2 cm., A low, rounded ceramic bowl with a pale cream base color sits on a reflective surface, showing a mirrored reflection beneath; the bowl has a wide rim with a gilded band and ornate gold decorative border, and gold handles on each side. Along the exterior there are delicate painted hanging floral motifs in shades of purple, blue, pink, green, and brown, with additional gold leaf accents and small painted insects in red and yellow. The bowl rests on short feet that are also gilded, and the background behind the bowl is a uniform gray.
