Vase, Yabu Meizan 1853–1934, c. 1900 Meiji 33, Japan, Osaka. Onion-shaped vase on a low ring foot with a long, slender neck bulging at the spout. Decorated with a freely composed kachôga flowers-and-birds motif: a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwines the neck, growing from the rock on which a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms grows beside the wisteria; two sparrows, painted in gold and iron black, fly around the plants. A small, delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament is placed in the lower part of the belly. Warm milky glaze with very fine cracklework; thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Gold-painted brand on the bottom in a square cartouche with three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan.
