Vase, Yabu Meizan 1853–1934, c. 1900 Meiji 33, Japan, Osaka. Onion-shaped vase on a low ring foot with a long, slender neck bulging at the spout. Decorated with a freely composed kachôga flowers-and-birds motif: a small, delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament in the lower belly; a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwining the neck and growing from a rock where a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms beside the wisteria; two sparrows painted in gold and iron black flying around the plants. Warm, milky glaze with very fine cracklework; thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Gold-painted maker’s mark at the bottom in a square cartouche with three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan. Ceramic vessel, height 15.0 cm, diameter 8.0 cm., A pale cream porcelain vase with a long narrow neck and rounded body sits against a gray background; the surface shows fine craquelure and delicate painted decoration including a small bird in flight, floral clusters, leafy vines, and branches rendered in gold, brown, green, blue, and red tones, with additional gold accents near the rim and base, and the vase is reflected faintly on the surface beneath it.
