Vase, Yabu Meizan 1853–1934, c. 1900 Meiji 33, Japan, Osaka. Onion-shaped vase on a low ring foot with a long slender neck bulging at the spout. Decorated with a freely composed kachoga flowers-and-birds motif: a small delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament on the lower belly; a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwining the neck, growing from a rock where a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms beside the wisteria; two sparrows painted in gold and iron black flying among the plants. Warm, milky glaze with very fine crackle; thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Gold-painted maker’s mark at the bottom in a square cartouche with three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan. Ceramics; height 15.0 cm, diameter 8.0 cm., A pale cream ceramic vase with a long narrow neck and a rounded bulbous base sits against a gray background; the surface features painted botanical motifs including a twisted brown branch, clusters of green leaves, delicate pale blossoms, a cascade of light purple flowers, and a spray of red flowers, along with gold-accented leaves and fine brown twigwork; near the base a small brown and cream bird perches on a textured mound depicted with brown and gray strokes, and the vase rests on a short cream pedestal banded with a thin gold line.
