Vase, Nogawa role classification of creator, workshop; ; repossession Krakow — wisteria, butterflies. Meiji 1868–1912. A slender miniature vase with a belly widening slightly toward the top and narrow straight arms; no neck and a spout in the form of a flat ring. The bottom is round, slightly recessed, with an engraved brand. Decoration is sparse: a naturalistically treated wisteria vine placed in the upper part of the belly on one side, from which a sumptuous flower cluster hangs down almost to the end of the vase. The masterly technique of combining various metals and alloys gives the vessel colorfulness, enhanced by the darker tone of the decorative motif than the background. Although made of silver, the use of gilding and black shakudo patina makes it appear colorful, combining naturalism with sublime decorativeness. ca. 1890–1900 Meiji Period, Japan; Kyoto. Vessel; height 15.7 cm, width 5.3 cm., A tall, narrow vase with a rounded rim and a smooth, glossy surface in brown and amber tones, decorated with a raised botanical design in dark brown to nearly black showing cascading leaves and hanging flower clusters; the background is a uniform gray, and the vase sits on a reflective surface that shows a faint muted reflection in pale beige and gray.
