Okimono in the shape of a taiko drum, maker possibly Nogawa, ca. 1890–1900 Meiji period, 1868–1912. Drum-shaped incense burner, Japan, Kyoto., Japanese Meiji-period vessel with butterflies, insects, plant motifs including paulownia. Height 15.0 cm, diameter 7.8 cm., A small decorative drum and a separate drum beater sit on a reflective surface against a plain light gray background. The drum is round with a warm brown and amber body showing darker brown floral motifs and black metal bands with rivets around its edges; it rests on a simple brass-colored stand with a few vertical supports. The beater is similarly colored in brown and amber with darker floral decorations and a brass-colored handle ending in a rounded loop; both objects cast faint reflections on the surface. The visible colors include brown, amber, brass-colored metal, black, and light gray.
