Vase with cover, Kanzan, Denshichi 1821–1890 creator, Japanese, Meiji period late 19th century; ceramics; ovoid vase with gently upward-flaring belly, narrow distinct foot and short narrow collar; iconography: karashishi lions and rakan; vessel height 61 cm, diameter 34.5 cm., A tall ceramic jar with a lid topped by a gold sculpted creature sits against a neutral gray background; the jar surface shows a palette of white, cream, gold, black, and gray with areas of pale brownish-gold wash near the top and base. The body of the jar is decorated with a painted scene featuring a group of figures in flowing robes rendered in black and gray line work, with several areas highlighted in metallic gold on garments and accessories. The figures include both standing and seated poses, some wearing ornate headpieces and one wearing a tall dark hat, and their faces and hair are depicted in fine black lines and pale tones. The lid has a band of gold decoration and the sculpted creature on top is entirely gold, with textured detailing. The background of the painted scene contains sweeping, wave-like brushwork in gray and light brown, and the overall finish of the jar is glossy.
