Vase with cover, Kanzan, Denshichi 1821–1890 maker, Japanese, Meiji period 1868–1912, late 19th century; ceramics; ovoid with a gently upward-flaring belly terminating in a narrow short collar; decorated with rakan, lions/karashishi iconography; vessel, height 61 cm, diameter 34.5 cm., A large lidded ceramic vase with a rounded body and a domed lid topped by a sculpted animal figure in metallic gold sits against a neutral gray background; the vase surface shows broad areas of metallic gold and ivory white with painted scenes of robed figures rendered in muted tones of white, beige, brown, and gray, accented with gold detailing; the lid and neck feature patterned gold decoration, and the sculpted finial is gold; the painted figures wear flowing white robes and appear among stylized cloud-like forms in shades of gray and beige, with additional small areas of gilded ornamentation and subtle darker line work defining faces and garments.
