Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpo Zoshuntei Sampo zo, c. 1842–1878, Arita, Japan. Pear-shaped blue-and-white porcelain storage pot with flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in cobalt in multiple tones with a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting alone under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water, with mountainous scenery, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and sails on the horizon. Lower base has a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting, related to Japanese bunjinga/nanga; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines. Underglaze cobalt signature on base: Zoshuntei Sampo zo. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A cylindrical ceramic object with a white base and blue painted decoration, showing a band of several rounded blue shapes above a horizontal blue line and a patterned blue border along the bottom; the background is a neutral light gray-beige, and the visible colors on the object are white and shades of blue.
