Storage Vessel with Lid, Zôshuntei Sanpo 1841–1878. Storage pot, blue-and-white porcelain, Japanese; pear-shaped vessel with flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting alone under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a vast body of water, with a picturesque mountainous landscape, waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails. Lower base: wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines. Neck and lower edge of lid: ornamental bands of diagonal lines forming triangular forms. Lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting, related to the Japanese bunjinga nanga movement; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines. Cobalt in a bright, pure shade in several tones. Underglaze cobalt signature on base: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo. c. 1842–1878. Arita, Japan. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A round ceramic plate shown from above with a white background and blue painted floral-like shapes across its surface; a central recessed area is surrounded by a patterned band and decorated with similar blue petal shapes, and the rim of the plate continues the blue floral motifs. The visible colors are white, several shades of blue, and a gray background.
