Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpo c. 1842–1878. Pear-shaped blue-and-white porcelain storage pot with flat cylindrical lid, Arita, Japan; height 21.8 cm, diameter 15.3 cm. Decorated in a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a broad body of water, with mountainous scenery, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails. Lower base features a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid decorated with a rock motif. Style modeled on Chinese Southern School painting and Japanese bunjinga nanga influence; free-form painting with precise, masterful cobalt underglaze lines in bright, pure tones. Underglaze signature: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo. Materials: blue-and-white porcelain. Period: late Edo–Meiji., A ceramic jar with a lid, predominantly white with blue painted designs, showing a landscape scene with a seated human figure among stylized rocks and foliage; the blue decoration varies in intensity from deep cobalt to pale blue, with patterned geometric bands near the top and base; the jar has a rounded body with a narrower neck and lid, and it rests on a reflective surface that mirrors its lower portion; the background is a neutral gray-beige.
