Storage vessel with lid, by Zôshuntei Sanpô Zoshuntei Sampo signed underglaze in cobalt: Zoshuntei Sampo zo; c. 1842–1878, Arita, Japan. Blue-and-white porcelain, pear-shaped with flat cylindrical lid; height 21.8 cm, diameter 15.3 cm. Decorated in Chinese-style landscape after Southern School painting—an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water with mountain peaks, a waterfall, and boat sails on the horizon. Lower base has a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid feature diagonal-line bands forming triangular forms; lid decorated with a rock motif. Motif recalls themes of Edo/Meiji-period bunjinga nanga. Cobalt in a bright, pure shade applied in several tones; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines indicating a highly skilled porcelain decorator., A lidded ceramic jar with a rounded body and short neck sits against a plain gray background, glazed in white with blue painted scenes and decorative bands; the lid and shoulder feature a geometric band in blue, and the body displays landscape-like brushwork including stylized mountains, foliage, and abstract shapes in varying shades of blue, with softer blue washes suggesting water or sky and a blue patterned band near the base, the piece reflecting lightly on the surface beneath it.
