Storage Vessel with Lid, Zôshuntei Sanpo 1841–1878. Storage pot, blue-and-white porcelain, Arita, Japan, c. 1842–1878. Pear-shaped vessel with a flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting alone under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water, contemplating a mountainous scene with waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails. Lower base features a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs. Lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting and the Japanese bunjinga nanga movement; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines. Cobalt in a bright, pure shade in several tones. Underglaze cobalt signature on the base: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A porcelain jar with a lid featuring blue painted landscape motifs on a white background, showing brushstroked mountain- and rock-like shapes and flowing washes of blue; the lid and neck have repeating arched and lined decorative bands in blue; the lower body has a geometric band near the base in blue; the overall colors visible are blue, white, and gray from the background and surface reflections.
