Storage Vessel with Lid, Zôshuntei Sanpo 1841–1878. Storage pot, blue-and-white porcelain, Japanese; Arita; c. 1842–1878. Pear-shaped vessel with flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water, with mountainous scenery, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails; pines, mountains, waterfalls, sages; kachôga bird-and-flower/iconography influence. Lower base has a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular forms; lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting that influenced Japanese bunjinga nanga; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines. Cobalt in bright, pure shades in several tones. Underglaze cobalt signature on the base: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A porcelain jar with a lid sits against a neutral background, predominantly white with blue painted decoration; the lid and body feature blue brushwork depicting stylized foliage and landscape elements, and a figure seated among rocks appears on the body. The jar has a rounded shoulder tapering toward the base and a patterned band in blue near the neck and another decorative band near the foot. The surface is glossy, and the jar casts a faint reflection on the smooth surface beneath it. The visible colors are white, several shades of blue, and neutral gray in the background and reflection.
