Unsigned. Mid-19th century Edo period, Japan. Sculpture, netsuke katabori. Height 9.8 cm; width 4.2 cm., A small carved brown wooden figure shows a person seated atop a deer-like animal. The person appears to wear flowing robes and has a rounded head and facial features carved in a darker brown shade. The animal has a lowered head and slender legs, with carved antler-like ridges and a pattern of light-colored circular inlays on its back and sides. The overall colors visible are brown, darker brown accents, and pale cream inlays, set against a neutral light gray background.
