Netsuke in the shape of Fukurokuju riding a deer. The deer has all its legs put together so that their hooves touch each other; the lowered head touches the front hooves, causing the animal's body to be curved into the shape of an irregular oval, on top of which sits a small figurine of Fukurokuju, the deity of longevity. Unsigned. Mid 19th century Edo period, Japan. Sculpture, netsuke katabori. Height 9.8 cm; width 4.2 cm., A carved brown wooden figurine depicting a person seated on the back of an animal with its head lowered; the wood shows darker and lighter brown tones with smooth polished surfaces, and the animal’s back is decorated with a group of pale circular inlays.
