Netsuke in the shape of Fukurokuju riding a deer. The deer has all its legs put together so that their hooves touch each other; the lowered head touches the front hooves, curving the body into an irregular oval, on top of which sits a small figurine of Fukurokuju, the deity of longevity. Unsigned. Mid 19th century Edo period, Japan. Sculpture, netsuke katabori. Height 9.8 cm, width 4.2 cm., A small carved wooden figure of a person seated on the back of an animal, shown from the rear; the figure and animal are a polished brown wood with a warm, reddish tone, and the animal's rounded back is decorated with a group of light cream circular inlays; there are a few circular holes visible on the animal's back, and the legs of the animal are elongated and slender, ending in rounded hooves; the surface shows smooth carved contours and subtle darker grain variations, and the whole object sits against a plain light gray background with a faint reflection beneath it.
