Netsuke in the shape of Fukurokuju riding a deer. The deer has all its legs put together so that their hooves touch each other; the lowered head touches the front hooves, causing the animal's body to be curved into the shape of an irregular oval, on top of which sits a small figurine of Fukurokuju, the deity of longevity. Unsigned. Mid 19th century Edo period, Japan. Sculpture, netsuke katabori. Height 9.8 cm; width 4.2 cm., A small carved figurine in brown tones with a glossy finish depicts a seated human figure atop an animal-like form; the human figure is darker brown and shows facial features and folded clothing with hands resting forward. The animal-like form is a lighter warm brown with carved flowing shapes resembling antlers or branches along its sides and several pale circular inlays scattered across its back and sides. The piece stands on narrow legs that taper to rounded feet and casts a soft reflection on a smooth light gray surface. The background is a uniform pale gray.
