Netsuke in the shape of Daikoku and Ebisu, Ryôji fl. ca. 1886–1900? sculptor; Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912; netsuke katabori carved from material; depicts Daikoku sitting on a rat holding a hammer and a bag, and Ebisu holding a fishing rod riding a giant fish, set in a miniature rocky landscape with a bridge; details include carps, rats, sea waves, bamboo leaves, finely carved facial features, fish scale outlines, rat fur, and the rat's eyes marked with microscopic inlays of black-dyed bone; 4th quarter of the 19th century; height 3.9 cm, width 4.0 cm., A small carved object sits on a reflective surface against a plain gray background, showing a smooth, aged ivory or beige material with darker brown shaded edges and carved lines. The object has an irregular oval shape with carved organic ridges and a few recessed circular holes in its center area. There is a small round patch on one side and an elongated carved oval panel with fine incised markings on the other, along with subtle stippled dots near the panel. The overall colors visible are beige, brown, and gray, with the reflection of the object faintly visible on the glossy surface.
