Vase, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912, ca. 1880 Meiji 13; cloisonné enamel vessel depicting plants, butterflies, phoenixes hoo/kinseki; height 30.5 cm, diameter 16.0 cm., A tall, slender-necked vase with a bulbous base stands against a plain neutral background; the vase has a predominantly reddish-brown surface decorated with a repeating small swirl pattern and scattered floral motifs in blue, white, yellow, green, and gold, a band of turquoise and brown checker detailing near the neck, a wide ornate band around the shoulder with complex floral and vine patterns in blue, turquoise, gold, white, and green, and panels around the lower body featuring stylized flowers and small bird motifs in blue, green, white, yellow, and gold, all resting on a dark base that casts a subtle reflection on the surface below.
