Vase, Japanese, Meiji period ca. 1880, Meiji 13, cloisonné enamel vessel, height 30.5 cm, diameter 16.0 cm; decorated with plants, butterflies, phoenixes hoo/kinseki., A tall, slender-necked vase with a bulbous base sits against a plain gray background; the vase surface shows a reddish-brown ground with ornate floral and bird motifs in colors including turquoise blue, light blue, white, green, gold, and touches of black and red, with a band of bright sky-blue panels around the lower body decorated with floral designs, decorative scalloped and geometric patterns in turquoise and gold near the neck, and several flower motifs and small detailed swirls on the neck and shoulder, all reflected faintly on the glossy surface below.
