Crossguard tsuba, Kawarabayashi Hidekuni 1825–1891. Rectangular tsuba with rounded corners nadegaku gata, with a slightly raised, rounded edge of the uchi nkaeshi mimi type. Decorated with a dragon with a pearl among clouds with lightning; rendered in painterly engraving imitating ink painting. Details inlaid with gold and very fine agates. Hidekuni was a student of Hideoki, a master of the Ozuki school; he died in 1891. Signed. 2nd half of the 19th century Edo/Meiji period, Japan. Tsuba; height 7.9 cm, width 7.3 cm, depth 0.4 cm., A rounded, slightly oval metallic object set against a plain gray background, with a central rectangular opening and a raised rim; the metal surface is mostly dull gray with areas of darker gray and subtle brownish spots, and a few thin, shiny gold inlaid lines forming a simple angular motif; there is a carved flowing wave-like pattern on one side with smooth, shallow grooves and curved contours, and the object shows slight surface wear and small pits.
