Vase with cover, Japanese, Edo period 18th century, imari ceramics depicting flowers, tree, bamboos, peonies and karashishi; vessel, height 25.5 cm, diameter 16 cm., A lidded ceramic vase with a glossy finish sits against a plain neutral background; the vase has a rounded body that narrows toward the base and a lid topped with a small sculpted animal figure in an off-white color. The main surface decoration features a deep blue ground with a pattern of floral and foliate motifs in shades of red and off-white, with some small areas of pale green visible in the floral panels; the lid echoes the same blue and red floral design. The body displays several off-white cartouche-shaped panels outlined in dark color containing delicate red floral linework, and the lower rim shows a band of red floral forms on the blue background. The sculpted finial on the lid is textured and off-white, and the vase rests on a short off-white foot that reflects slightly on the glossy surface beneath.
