Candlestick shokudai, ; materials/features: lotuses, turtles, cranes iconography, animals; culture: Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912, 2nd half of the 19th century, Japan; height 37.0 cm., A slender metal sculpture with a muted gold and dark bronze finish stands on a rounded base that resembles a turtle form with textured shell-like details and small feet; two long, thin vertical supports rise from the base, one of which curves into a drooping elongated shape that ends in a clawed foot, while a vine-like element wraps partway up the supports and carries a small decorative flower near the top; the uppermost section features a shallow petal-shaped dish with a scalloped edge in a warm gold tone; the background is a smooth, neutral gray and the surface beneath the sculpture shows a soft reflection.
