Sake bottle tokkuri, gift; Japanese art; Edo 1603–1868–Meiji 1868–1912; 19th century. A bottle with a spherical belly and a narrow cylindrical neck; covered with brown glaze which in the upper part of the belly and on the neck turns light coffee-coloured and becomes spotted. Decorated on the belly with a branch of biwa Japanese medlar, fruits made with green-yellow glaze and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, leaves made using the technique of sprinkling on black lacquer. Japan; Bizen. Vessel; height 18 cm, diameter 11.8 cm., A round wooden object viewed from one side with a dark brown rim and a slightly lighter brown central area, showing a worn and textured surface with some rough edges and chips; there are a few paper labels affixed to the center in muted beige and off-white tones with decorative borders and small printed shapes visible; the surface has areas of darker blackish-brown discoloration and lighter brown streaks, and the background around the object is a flat gray color.
