Vase, Colored porcelain vessel, Qing dynasty mid-18th century, China. Mascarons on the shoulder; decoration includes four reserves with figural representations and a gilded edge. Height 40.5 cm; diameter 40 cm., A rounded ceramic jar sits on a dark surface against a dark gray background; the jar has a wide body tapering to a narrower base and a short neck with a dark metallic rim. The surface of the jar is predominantly cream with painted areas in red, green, black, and brown; decorative red geometric patterns and latticework cover much of the upper and lower bands, while several scalloped cartouches on the body contain painted figurative scenes in green, red, brown, and black showing human figures and stylized landscape elements. There are small sculpted dark brown/bronze lion head-like handles attached near the shoulder. The overall palette includes cream, red, green, dark brown, black, and touches of ochre.
