Head of Luohan, creator unknown, Chinese, Qing 1644–1911; subject: arhat/luohan, monk; material: sculpture; inscriptions/notes: according to a Chinese specialist in Buddhist art the sculpture appears to be contemporary and may date to the late Republic period, 19th century, though another note suggests China, 9th century; height 52 cm., A stone bust of a bald head displayed on a rectangular plinth, carved with pronounced facial features including furrowed brows, drooping eyelids, a broad nose, and downturned lips; the ears are prominent and slightly elongated, and the neck shows subtle musculature and a crack at the base where it meets the plinth. The sculpture surface is pale off-white with faint darker mottling, set against a smooth gradient background transitioning from dark charcoal at the top to medium gray toward the bottom, and the plinth is a textured light beige resting on a flat dark gray or black surface.
