Portable picnic set sagejûbako, Japanese; Edo 1603–1868–Meiji 1868–1912, 19th century. Rectangular cabinet without side walls on a stand; two stacked food containers set incomplete; originally four; two tin sake bottles on a stand. Top tabletop with handle, one small drawer and a shelf for trays missing. Exterior covered with black roiro-nuri lacquer; interiors of food containers with vermilion lacquer. Surface ornament executed in hiramaki-e and nashiji techniques with motifs of blooming wisteria, camellias, rosettes coins, leaves, plum trees, and wolfberries; includes a mon. Height 31.3 cm; width 30.5 cm; depth 17.8 cm; weight 2.29 kg., A small rectangular black wooden cabinet with a rounded metal handle on top and gold painted floral and geometric decorations, an open upper shelf, a lower compartment containing a red-lined open box with gold motifs and a drawer below decorated with gold floral designs, and two metallic cylindrical bottles with narrow necks standing beside the box; the cabinet shows gold accents on its inner edges and decorative panels, with visible colors including black, gold, red, silver, and a brownish tone on the handle, all set against a plain light gray background.
