Crossguard tsuba, Tomotsugu; Japanese; Edo period 1603–1868, 19th century ; tsuba, height 8.0 cm, width 7.8 cm, depth 0.6 cm. Openwork sukashi in the shape of a seven-petaled mokkô rosette, with openwork petals divided by arched lines forming a spiderweb pattern, integrally woven ryôhitsu ana holes and an oval seppa-dai. Signed. Materials: metal; function: sword crossguard for katana., A round, flat metal object with an openwork floral or wheel-like pattern sits against a plain grey background; the metal appears dark brown with areas of lighter brown and subtle reddish-brown tones, showing a slightly rough, aged surface and varied patina.
