Vase, Tôritei maker, satsuma, Japanese, decorated with insects, tree trunks, flowers, plant ornaments, birds, peonies, pines, crickets, monkeys, kacho flowers and birds, kachoga iconography, lotuses, irises, grasses, cranes; Meiji period 1868–1912, ca. 1885 Meiji 18; Japan: Kyoto, Awata; ceramic vessel; height 32 cm, width 15 cm., A tall cylindrical ceramic object stands against a plain gray background, its surface predominantly off-white with a slightly aged, creamy tone. The object is decorated with painted natural motifs including green pine foliage, branches in brown, and several birds rendered with white, black, and touches of blue and brown; there are floral clusters in shades of pink, red, and green near the lower portion. A recessed hollow area on the front reveals a small sculpted figure with dark and orange-brown coloring set within a textured cavity. The base edge is irregular and shows some darker beige and brown variations, and the overall piece has fine speckled detailing in brown across its surface.
