Netsuke in the shape of a twig with biwa loquat fruits, Gyokuhôsai Yamada Bunjiro, active in Edo, 2nd half 19th century, ca. 1850–1860 Kaei 5–Ansei 7. Ivory carving engraving, netsuke katabori, height 2.0 cm, width 4.2 cm, depth 2.8 cm. Signed Gyokuhosai. Miniaturized, naturalistic depiction of a biwa branch; the artist carved three microscopic landscapes above the fruits identified by inscriptions as Shinobazu Pond, the Tama River, and the Sengenyama plateau. Sculpture, Japan, 2nd half of the 19th century., A small carved object rests on a flat surface against a plain background, showing a smooth, polished surface in shades of cream, beige, and light brown with darker brown accents in crevices; the carving features rounded, organic forms with a hollowed opening revealing detailed interior texture and a few incised marks on the exterior, and soft shadowing extends to the right on a gray surface under soft, diffuse lighting.
