Miniature netsuke katabori carved as a realistic biwa branch; three fruits contain microscopic carved landscapes identified by inscriptions as Shinobazu Pond, the Tama River, and the Sengenyama plateau. Signed Gyokuhosai. Sculpture, netsuke., A small carved object in cream and pale yellow tones rests on a smooth light gray surface against a darker gray background; the carving shows rounded forms and folded shapes with engraved lines and small dotted patterns in brown, and a few areas with darker brown shading and tiny carved openings, giving glimpses of interior textures; the overall piece casts a soft shadow on the surface.
