Netsuke in the shape of a twig with biwa loquat fruits, Gyokuhôsai signature of Yamada Bunjiro, active in Edo mid-19th century, ca. 1850–1860 Kaei 5–Ansei 7, Japan. Ivory, engraved, netsuke katabori, height 2.0 cm × width 4.2 cm × depth 2.8 cm. Miniature ivory-carved branch treated faithfully to the plant’s appearance so the loquat fruits are immediately recognizable; three fruits contain microscopic carved landscapes identified by inscriptions as Shinobazu Pond, the Tama River, and the Sengenyama plateau. Signed: Gyokuhosai., A small carved object rests on a smooth surface, showing a cluster of rounded forms connected by looping stems and carved details; the object is a creamy ivory color with darker brown shading in crevices and grooves, and there are a few polished highlights where light reflects. The background is a uniform gray with subtle gradient, and a soft shadow falls beneath and to one side of the carved piece. The carving displays textured areas, smooth rounded surfaces, and some hollowed openings, with darker brown accents emphasizing carved lines and indentations.
