Bowl by Toyota Masanobu author/craftsman. Deep bowl on a low, ring-shaped base with a knobbed body and serrated rim, the bowl reminiscent of a chrysanthemum flower. Outer wall decorated with clumps of blooming irises growing out of water encircling the bowl; flowers and leaves painted with two-tone blue enamel, outlines and stylized waves/ripples painted in gold. Inner surface decorated with a large gold chrysanthemum rosette imperial coat of arms in the mirror, with the Tokugawa family coat of arms inscribed in the center; side wall filled with a dense, colorful ornament of various chrysanthemum flowers and butterflies. The garden motif is painted in white, red, blue, gold, and green using overglaze enamel paints and gold, completed at the rim by a uniform cobalt blue valance ornament. Signature on the bottom painted in gold reading: Satsuma yaki, Satsuma kuni, Ijun'in, Toyota Masanobu. Satsuma ware, 2nd half of the 19th century Meiji period, Kagoshima, Japan. Vessel; height 12.0 cm, diameter 28.0 cm., A decorative round bowl viewed from above with a scalloped rim, showing a central circular gold medallion with raised petal-like segments and an inner motif of three stylized leaves, surrounded by a cream background with crackled texture and elaborate floral and butterfly ornamentation in colors including gold, red, green, blue, brown, and black, with a repeating band of darker scalloped decoration near the rim and a neutral gray background behind the bowl.
