Bowl, Toyota Masanobu maker, signature on bottom in gold. Deep satsuma bowl on a low ring-shaped base, knobbed body with serrated rim resembling a chrysanthemum. Outer wall: clumps of blooming irises growing from water, flowers and leaves painted in two-tone blue enamel; stylized waves and ripples outlined in gold. Inner surface: large gold chrysanthemum rosette imperial coat of arms in the mirror with the Tokugawa family crest in the center; side wall filled with dense, colorful chrysanthemum flowers and butterflies painted in white, red, blue, gold, and green using overglaze enamels and gold. Top edge finished with a uniform cobalt blue valance ornament. Inscription reads: Satsuma yaki, Satsuma kuni, Ijun'in, Toyota Masanobu. 19th century Meiji period, Japan, Kagoshima. Ceramic vessel; height 12.0 cm, diameter 28.0 cm., A scalloped ceramic bowl shown against a neutral background with a pale exterior and deep blue painted floral motifs along the lower outer surface, a scalloped rim painted a dark blue on its inner edge, and an interior densely decorated with intricate floral patterns in gold, blue, red, green, and brown, with visible textured glazing and fine line detailing.
