Crossguard tsuba, Jingo Shigenaga ?-1854 and Shimizu fifth master of the Shimizu family makers. Tsuba in the shape of nademokkô otafuku gata; large ryôhitsuana of the same three-petalled shape, developed in the Gotô school and later popularised by the Higo school. Decorated with brass inlay, in high and low relief takazôgan, hirazôgan, depicting a pilgrim's hat and bag on the obverse, and two crossed arrows on the reverse. Signed by the fifth master of the Shimizu family. Edo period, Tenpô era 1830–1844, 1st half of the 19th century. Japan, Yatsushiro. Tsuba. Height 7.8 cm; width 6.5 cm; depth 0.3 cm., A flat, irregularly rounded metal object with a central rectangular opening and two parallel slots, showing a dark brown patina with areas of lighter brown and small highlights of gold; there is a decorative curved inlaid motif on one side in gold and an abstract raised design on the opposite side in gold and darker tones, all set against a plain light gray background.
