Cup, Persian, Qajar dynasty 1785–1925, 19th century; earthenware vessel, height 25.5 cm, diameter 18.4 cm. Decoration: cartouches with a bust of a man, animals lions, birds, figures, flowers, geometric and small plant ornament; figurative motifs., Iran., A decorative chalice-shaped object stands against a plain light gray background, featuring a flared cup and a tapered stem with a round base. The surface is richly ornamented with embossed golden figures and motifs set against painted backgrounds in blue, green, red, white, and black. The upper band of the cup shows a blue background with scrolling floral patterns and several stylized golden animals and a single framed humanlike figure. Below that is a greenish band with leafy tendrils and more golden animal figures, followed by a narrow red band with vine motifs. The stem includes alternating bands of geometric black-and-white patterns, a ribbed golden collar, a red floral band, and a lower blue band with golden birds and animals. The base rim has a black-and-white interlaced border and the object casts a faint reflection on the surface beneath it.
