Oval tsuba tatemaru gata with a rectangular edge kaku mimi. In the lower part are two holes udenuki ana for threading the ribbon. The surface of the shield is decorated on both sides with an inscription engraved in cursive script. On the obverse, an invocation to Amida Buddha: Namu Amida butsu praise be to Amida Buddha; on the reverse, the inscription: Iki sugi tarinari kono otoko this man has lived too long. Signed. 17th century Edo period, Enpô era, 1673–1681, Japan; Ômi Eshu province. Tsuba; height 9.1 cm, width 8.6 cm, depth 0.3 cm., A flat round metal disc with a central rectangular slot and two smaller round holes near one edge, showing surface scratches and shallow engraved markings; the metal appears dark brown to black with lighter brown worn areas and hints of gray, set against a pale gray to off-white background.
