Ginger vessel with lid, Nagoya Shippô Kaisha ca. 1870–1880, Meiji period. Small ovoid porcelain vase with round flattened lid; exterior covered with lemon-yellow glaze with crackle grid, interior and base white under transparent glaze. Decorated with a naturalistic bean-vine motif of greenish-brown leaves and pink flowers executed in cloisonné enamel totai-shippo technique: decorative motif was carved into the surface before filling with enamel and firing, using brass wires and enamel in several shades of green and brown. Underglaze cobalt signature: Nihon Shippo Kaisha sei zo; overglaze red-iron rhomboid cartouche with sign sho. Porcelain cloisonné method developed by Tsukamoto Kaisuke 1828–1887 around 1868; also produced by Takeuchi Chubei and Suzuki Seiichiro; Takeuchi Chubei was among leading craftsmen employed by Nihon Shippo Kaisha. Possible attribution to Takeuchi Chubei though object is unsigned. Japan, Nagoya. Vessel; height 12.4 cm, diameter 9.6 cm., A rounded ceramic vase with a glossy yellow surface showing fine crackle patterns and a pale rim, decorated with a flowing vine motif of green leaves in several shades including dark green and lighter green, and touches of pale blue on some leaf undersides and vine segments, set against a neutral gray background and reflected faintly on a glossy surface below.
