Ginger vessel with lid, Nagoya Shippô Kaisha c. 1870–1880, Meiji period 1868–1912. Small ovoid porcelain vase with round flattened lid; exterior covered with lemon-yellow glaze with decorative crackle grid, interior and base white with transparent glaze. Decorated with a naturalistic bean-vine motif of greenish-brown leaves and pink flowers, loosely twining around the body and reaching the lid. Motif executed in cloisonné enamel using brass wires and enamel in several shades of green and brown; the design was carved into the vessel surface before filling and firing totai-shippo technique. Signature in underglaze cobalt: Nihon Shippo Kaisha sei zo; overglaze red-iron stamp in a rhomboid cartouche with the sign so presumed exporter’s mark. Porcelain cloisonné developed around 1868 by Tsukamoto Kaisuke 1828–1887; similar pieces were made by Takeuchi Chubei and Suzuki Seiichiro, who worked for Nihon Shippo Kaisha in Nagoya.
