Ginger vessel with lid, Nagoya Shippô Kaisha 1871–1890. Japanese, Meiji period c. 1870–1880. Porcelain cloisonné totai-shippo technique, small ovoid vase with round flattened lid, height 12.4 cm, diameter 9.6 cm. Outer surface covered with lemon-yellow glaze with crackle grid; interior and bottom white covered with transparent glaze. Decorated with a naturalistic bean-vine motif of greenish-brown leaves and pink flowers, loosely twining around the body and reaching the lid. Motif executed in cloisonné enamel with brass wires and multiple shades of enamel; decorative motif was carved into the vessel’s surface before filling with enamel. Signature in cobalt underglaze: Nihon Shippo Kaisha sei zo; overglaze red-iron stamp: a rhombus with the sign sho presumed exporter’s mark. Attributed techniques and makers: Tsukamoto Kaisuke developed porcelain cloisonné c. 1868; similar works made by Takeuchi Chubei and Suzuki Seiichiro; possible attribution to a Nagoya craftsman employed by Nihon Shippo Kaisha unsigned., A rounded ceramic jar with a lid sits against a neutral background, predominantly yellow with a crackled surface texture; a winding vine painted in blue-green runs up the body and over the lid, bearing large green leaves and a few smaller bluish-green leaves, along with darker brownish seed pod shapes; the jar has subtle areas of darker green shading on the leaves and thin darker outlines around the vine and leaf veins, and a thin pale band around the lid edge and the base.
