Ginger vessel with lid, Nagoya Shippô Kaisha 1871–1890. Japanese, Meiji period c. 1870–1880. Porcelain cloisonné totai-shippo technique, small ovoid vase with round flattened lid, height 12.4 cm, diameter 9.6 cm. Outer surface covered with lemon-yellow glaze with crackle grid; interior and bottom white covered with transparent glaze. Decorated with a naturalistic bean-vine motif of greenish-brown leaves and pink flowers, loosely twining around the body and reaching the lid. Motif executed in cloisonné enamel with brass wires and multiple shades of enamel; decorative motif was carved into the vessel’s surface before filling with enamel. Signature in cobalt underglaze: Nihon Shippo Kaisha sei zo; overglaze red-iron stamp: a rhombus with the sign sho presumed exporter’s mark.
