Crossguard tsuba, Kinai, school, Echizen Kinai, school; phoenixes iconography, hoo phoenix; sword crossguard for katana; Japanese art/culture; weapon, melee weapon; Edo 1603–1868 swords. Tsuba: round maru-gata with a rectangular edge with slight convexity kaku mimi ko-niku; oval seppa-dai; oval ryôhitsu ana matching usual kozuka hitsu ana. Decoration: mythical bird hôô with spread wings and long tail feathers arranged in a fan-like pattern, incorporated into a circle on both sides; plumage details engraved. ca. 1800 Edo Period, 1603–1868, Japan. Diameter 9.3 cm; thickness 0.5 cm., A circular metal object with a dark brown to black patina features an openwork design of a bird with detailed feathers and a curved beak, occupying the lower half, and a pattern of large stylized feather shapes radiating from the center to the upper edge; the surface shows areas of worn lighter gray where the metal is polished or abraded, and the rim is smooth and slightly raised.
