Crossguard tsuba, Kaneie craftsman, Edo period 18th century, 1603–1868, Japan — Fushimi, Yamashiro. Tsuba in the shape of a quatrefoil mokkô with an uchikaeshi edge, katahitsu ana one side hole. Relief decoration showing the sennin Gama sitting under a tree, holding a staff and looking at a three-legged frog; reverse with a sketched landscape motif with a waterfall. Details eyes, pebbles, staff inlaid with gold and shakudô. Materials: metal shakudô inlay. Function: sword crossguard katana. Height 7.2 cm, width 6.8 cm, depth 0.4 cm., A dark brown, roughly cloud-shaped metal object with a textured surface and two irregular cutouts, showing a carved scene of a seated figure holding a curved staff and a nearby frog-like creature; small inlaid dots of gold highlight parts of the staff, the creature’s eyes, and a few scattered spots on the surface, and there are lighter brown and subtle reddish-brown variations across the metal.
