Crossguard tsuba, Umetada school; maker: Umetada Shigeyoshi. Oval tsuba tatemaru gata with a slightly rounded and raised edge of the uchi kaeshi type and seppa dai oval. Decorated on both sides with a relief motif of Chinese coins, details highlighted with gold inlay using the nunome zôgan technique. 1st half of the 18th century Edo period, 1603–1868, Japan. Materials/subject: sword crossguard tsuba for katana; height 8.7 cm, width 7.9 cm, depth 0.3 cm., A round, dark brown metal object with a central vertical oval opening and two adjacent oval cutouts, decorated with a group of circular motifs resembling coins, each with square central holes and several areas highlighted in gold; the surface shows textured, worn patina and subtle variations of brown and gray.
